With the increase in fuel costs and the financial situation worldwide, this year seems like a year were most families will be spending their valuable holiday time in their home country. As a child, our family very seldom went abroad for our annual holidays, instead we would have many weekends and weeks throughout the year at caravan sites up and down the country.
My first recollection of these holidays was in a large static caravan somewhere on the east coast of Scotland but as time moved on we eventually purchased our own touring caravan. It was at this time our weekend breaks took off and it would seem that most Friday evenings after school would be spent travelling. Often the camp sites we would visit were no more than one hours drive from our house but on some occasion they could be up to two or three hours drive away.

Regardless if holidaying in a static caravan or a touring caravan we always had fun and a new place to explore. As a child this seemed wonderful and it must have been these travel and exploring experiences that lead to me becoming a caravan enthusiast in my adulthood. Across the years I have taken my family around the United Kingdom and on many occasions across the English Channel to France, Germany Switzerland in fact a good many of the mainland European countries.
As mentioned previous there are two types of caravan, the static and the touring. What I haven't mentioned yet is the motor home. These are your 3 choices when considering a caravan holiday and although they all may seem the same they are in fact a lot different from each other.
The touring caravan will be towed by your car to your site of choice. Straight away the choice of touring caravan you have will depend on the size of car you own. Touring caravans are available from small two-berth, easily towed by an average family car up to six-berth, which will require something more substantial like a four x four. With a static caravan you will not be using a car to get it to any site but then again once at your site of choice it would be there for a long time, you had better like the area! The motor home takes away any need for a separate unit to pull the caravan as this is the car and caravan in one package. The disadvantage of the motor home however is, once set up in your camp site you have lost your transport. You will often see motor homes with bicycles attached to the rear or even small motorcycles, and some cases you may even see a large motor home towing a very small car!
The interior space of any caravan is limited but in a static caravan the available space may be utilised better, with separate living areas and bedrooms. The touring caravan and motor homes however will have a seating area that doubles as your bedroom come evening time. Storage of clothes, food and everything else that makes for a good holiday may also be an issue with touring caravans and motor homes. With limited space you are forced into choosing which items you want to bring on holiday and those that you would like but can't fit in. Obviously with a static caravan you visit often you will be leaving a lot of your clothes and kitchen utensils there reducing the need to transport as much.
A third and final consideration in the decision of touring caravan, static caravan or motor home is luxury. While a basic caravan model may include a fridge, a toilet and a heater the luxury models can include stereos, showers, satellite TV, microwaves and double glazing. In fact today most items found in your home can be found in caravans.
If you are caravanning with kids a basic touring caravan will be a great addition to your family, while adding flexibility to your holiday destinations. For a little more luxury for your money check out what motor homes have for you but remember that lack of transport issue. Finally, if you a special place in your heart then you could get a static caravan to visit any time of the year.

The owner or manager of your caravan park will no doubt leave you instructions or be on hand to offer advice, but it's a good idea to be familiar with the procedures that could protect your holiday home.
Before leaving your holiday home for the last time at the end of the season, ensure you empty the fridge and give it a clean with a weak solution of bicarbonate of soda. Leave the fridge door propped open to allow air to circulate.
To prevent burst pipes through winter, it is essential to turn off the water at the mains and drain down the entire system. Expert staff on the park should carry this out where possible.
Some holiday homes will be fitted with central heating systems that contain anti-freeze. These should be set to the temperature stated in the manufacturers instructions and serviced regularly to spot any potential problems before they occur.
Sinks and toilets provide convenient entrances for vermin, so don't forget to close toilet seats and put plugs into plugholes.
Remove all your valuables from the holiday home and leaving cupboard doors and curtains open, so it's easy for potential thieves to see that there is nothing in the holiday home worth breaking in for.
An alarm system is also a good idea if you don't already have one fitted. You can even buy an alarm that will alert the park owner or manager of a break in. Speak to your park for advice.
Condensation can be a major problem through the colder months without adequate ventilation in your holiday home. To help prevent condensation from damaging your interior, leave interconnecting doors open and stack any removable upholstery such as sofa cushions, in the middle of the rooms, or at least away from walls.
Should you be in any doubt about preparing your static caravan holiday home for the winter, speak to your park owner or manager.

The Park
Once you have decided on your location you need to find the right Holiday Park for you. It is often a great idea to book a visit with parks sales team to allow you to have a full tour of the Holiday Park, available plots and example Static Caravans.
Many parks cater very well for children with excellent facilities including the all important pool. Others have a quieter more relaxed feel that appeals to a very different buyer.
Remember to check how long your park is open for throughout the year as many parks operate a 'closed season'. A park that closes over the winter may not be a bad thing as it gives the park owner a chance to make improvements and repairs and also discourages the 'residential' purchaser. The last thing you want on your holiday park is someone repairing their car next door to you! Also check how long you can site you Static Caravan before it requires replacement or removal, this will be outlined in your contract with the Park Operator. Some parks will allow you to keep your caravan on the park indefinitely provided that you pay the appropriate fees and maintain your caravan in good condition.
Consider;
· Getting to know the Park
· Whether park is right for you
· What Facilities are on offer
· Owner events
· How long is your Holiday Park open throughout the season
· How long you can site your Static Caravan
Running Costs
As with any major purchase you need to consider the price and the ongoing running costs such as;
1. Site Fees - These are annual fees and vary by park and plot
2. Gas - This is normally purchased by the bottle
3. Electricity
4. Insurance - You will need to ensure the value of your static holiday home and contents. Prices can now be found easily on the internet.
5. General Maintenance - Modern Static Caravan are extremely well constructed and require little or no external maintenance as the external aluminum skin is extremely durable. Manufacturer warranties can be extended but do not cover damage from wear & tear.
Many people choose to subsidize the cost of ownership by letting their caravan holiday home. This can help towards the annual fees payable. Many parks will offer rental programmes including booking and maintenance (i.e. cleaning) arrangements. Remember if you let yours you will compromise the time you and you family have to use it, so think clearly about you priorities.
The Static Caravan
You will generally have a wide choice of Static Caravan from a basic model through to a very high specifications luxury example.
Generally this choice will depend on your budget and personal tastes.
If you indented to spend extended periods at it the specification of kitchen and bathroom facilities, are normally a priority. When buying one you need to be aware there may be a substantial waiting time for delivery, if it is manufactured to order.
Many buyers choose to spread payments for their caravan holiday home and most parks offer finance arrangements and special offers. As with any credit arrangements it is always worth shopping around for the best deal. Finance packages offered by park operators usually use the caravan as collateral so you are not risking your home unlike many large purchases that are financed

Finally you will need to consider the location of your Static Caravan on the selected Holiday Park. Although this is the last stage of the process you still need to research fully.
