Taking your caravan onto a ferry or in the case of the UK onto the EuroTunnel train for the first time can be a nerve-racking experience. Knowing what to expect and being prepared for it can make things much easier.
Give yourself plenty of time at the ferry or train terminal by arriving early. You will be less flustered and the process will go more smoothly if you do not have to rush things.
Have a folder or bag with your passports, and tickets in it ready to hand over when you book in. After booking in you will be directed to the waiting area. There you can turn off the gas and the 12V supply to your fridge, so that your battery does not go flat.
When caravanning abroad most people take some food with them. Be sure not to pack any foods whose export is prohibited. When you book your tickets ask for a copy of this list. The list changes periodically, so ask each time you book. Do not be tempted to pack prohibited foods. Customs search caravans for these products; if they find them, they then search the entire caravan and car. This can take several hours and you can miss your crossing. Carrying spare petrol is also banned on EuroTunnel and most ferries. You can take pets, but only with an up to date pet passport, vet certificate, worming and vaccines. You have to pre-book your pet, and need at least an extra hour to book your pet onto the ferry or train.
You will be told when it is time to board and directed to a specific area on the ferry or train. Follow these instructions carefully; there is not a lot of room or time for manoeuvring, so you need to go where directed first time. Leave the car in gear and apply your car's handbrake and the caravan's. Take all valuables out of the car and caravan.
Return to your vehicle when instructed to do so. When the ferry or train has come to a complete stop, remove your caravan's brake. When instructed to do so, take your car out of gear and start it. Once you have cleared the terminal stop and restore power to your fridge.
