It depends whether you are buying brand new or not. My Mum and Dad bought 3 in a 20 period. After about 10 years they really start to show their age although new caravans are much better these days with double glazing and central heatingg etc. The depreciation on them is alsocolossall. My parents last caravan cost £24000 12 years ago which she sold 2 years ago for £750 because the site owners told residents either buy a new caravan or leave the site. As this was the second time it had happened under the 10 year and off rule they got rid of it. Also bear in mind you will need to pay ground rates which is about £1500-£2000 per year so you may need to let out the caravan to holidaymakers to recoup costs.

I did have some wonderful weekends away and had a set of home and away friends and some of my best memories were at the caravan site so don't let the above put you off.

Those owners are missing out, you can have some great holidays in your caravan during the winter. Driving conditions are rarely, if ever, bad enough to make towing a caravan difficult or unsafe.

Careful preparation is the key to being able to enjoy your caravan year round. If you are not convinced that winter caravanning is for you ease yourself in gently with a couple of weekend city breaks. Do not try to travel far from home the fact that you are only away for 2 or 3 days will not matter. A change of scenery provides a good break even when you do not stray far from home.

Before you set out make sure that your caravan is in good condition for the journey, check that your tyres and lights are all in perfect working order. If you have any gaps around the windows get these fixed before you go. Trying to sleep in a draughty or damp caravan in the winter is nobody's idea of fun. Also get your heating serviced to make sure that it works well and is safe. Take enough gas with you and an electric heater, so that if you do run out of gas you have an alternative form of heating.

Pack plenty of warm clothes, so that you can take off and put on extra layers. Ensure that you have at least a waterproof jacket for use if you breakdown. Remember that drying wet clothes is difficult, so you need at least one extra change of clothes just in case you get caught in the rain whilst shopping.

Just in case of a winter breakdown pack a torch, a spade, an ice scrapper, de-icier, a few extra blankets and a fully charged mobile. If you have snow chains pack these along with a piece of old carpet to use in case you get stuck in snow. Check that your breakdown insurance is valid for the dates that you will be travelling on, some people only buy their caravan breakdown cover for a few weeks or months at a time.

Damp is a nitemare, because the cause is hard to find.first empty the caravan of everything, especially the soft furnishings.it could be-
1) gaps in panels, spray with a hose for ten mins to check this,
2) condensation forming because of thermal bridging where the insulation is not continous.
3) trapped moisture, from cooking, boiling kettle, big panting dogs! quite a few litres a day. also, gas cooker and heater produces water vapour.
4) The roof lights on these things are troublesome and can leak.rain is sometimes blown sideways by the wind.
or maybe some other cause.

find out the cause first,
If you can hook up a dehumidifier once your pretty sure what the problem is that would help a bit, but be patient, the chemical damp absorbers will not do any harm but are more suitable for cupboards rather than a big area. if you cannot stand the thought of not trying to dry it out and cannot get an electric dehumidifier in there because its in storage, id suggest getting a big bag of plaster and some plastic trays this will be a lot cheaper.
good luck

I also take along extra fluids for everything an engine needs. A couple quarts of oil, anti freeze, brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, extra fan belt. You can get a store brand inexpensively of all these things, I keep mine in a bucket with a lid. Its always ready to go when I take a trip.

A first aid kit is a must, you can find ones made up at most pharmacies.

Take lots of games, we keep dominoes, cards and a couple board games in the trailer all the time. We have more fun as a family when we play a game together than sitting around watching TV.

Have a good trip

The majority of people will look to get their caravan serviced when they take it out of storage in the spring. Therefore, this is when your local dealership or serving workshop will be the busiest. Why not book your caravan in for its annual service now when they are quieter and it's one less thing to think about come spring time.

If you're leaving your caravan on a storage site or away from home for the winter, sort out which belongings you will be removing from the caravan and taking back home. For example, you will probably want to remove all clothing and bedding and even curtains, not to mention electrical items and anything of value. By leaving your caravan as empty as possible, with nothing on display, you will deter thieves from breaking in.

To minimise any damage caused by condensation and damp, you could use bowls of salt or dehumidifying crystals dotted around the caravan which will absorb any moisture. As condensation will form on the windows, move all upholstery away from the sides of the caravan and stack it in the centre.

To prevent damage caused by frozen and burst pipes, it's important to drain down the water system in your caravan. Simply turn off the water system and open all the taps. Once the system has fully drained, place plugs in plugholes. Don't forget to drain down the cassette toilet too and close the toilet lid to prevent any wildlife from entering your caravan.

Give your caravan a thorough clean before leaving it for the winter. Use bicarbonate of soda to clean the fridge and leave the fridge door open to allow air to circulate. The same applies for cupboard and wardrobe doors.

On the outside of the caravan, prevent moving parts from rusting solid by oiling such things as the handbrake and corner steady.

There's good information on the Office of Fair Trading website (link attached). The pdf documents on the right of the page are for 'Guidance on unfair terms in holiday caravan agreements' and 'A fair pitch for your holiday caravan'.
