Caravan Insurance Archives

Hi There

If you inform your insurance company that you have a caravan then your caravan will be insured under a fully comprehensive policy.
However, the fully comprehensive policy for your car will only cover the caravan for third party risks. (If your caravan causes damage to someone else property, the insurance company will only pay for the damage to the other persons property and not your caravan).

There are companies out there that supply policies to cover a caravan fully comprehensively, I have a policy myself as I tow caravans for a living and the premium for my policy on top of the car insurance is £975

Hope this helps

Our current home insurers say that if we site a caravan for letting, our home insurance will be invalid. Have tried many insurers and none will offer house insurance with additional public liability for letting caravan. Business insurers say they don't cover.. Caravan insurers say "only if on licensed park" There MUST be someone out there who has a static caravan sited on land adjacent to their home and who knows how to ensure that their home and their visitors are covered by insurance! Help!

OK, this is bizarre. By Caravan, do you mean "camper"? You've bought a camper, you want to rent it out?

You can buy the coverage for the camper itself, through Foremost or American Century - go to a local, independent agent, and ask if they'll do that. But the LAND it's on, will need a general liability policy, which will run you $750, minimum premium, IF there's no pool or lake.

Start with the agent that writes your house insurance, and if they can't do it, you'll have to move your business to an agent that CAN do it all - including the "good stuff", your house and car insurance. If you call an agent, and ask them to write the junk - the rental camper and a stand alone CGL policy, they'll tell you no - too much hassle, not enough commission to cover the time investment.

default Caravan owners need to ask themselves now is my awning covered for storm damage?

As global warming makes our weather ever more unpredictable, storm damage to many things is going to be on the increase. However some caravan insurance policies do not provide adequate cover the most vulnerable item in the caravanner's equipment, the awning. The most common claim for awnings is for storm damage but some caravan insurance policies specifically exclude any form of storm damage to awnings and others have restrictive small print which says something like "Awnings are only covered for storm damage if the caravan is also damaged at the same time". Very often the only damage will be a ripped awning cover and bent or broken poles, the caravan is often undamaged.

Phil Holden, MD of Caravanwise http://www.caravanwise.co.uk/ says "There's really only two types of claim for awnings, in over 10 year experience as a specialist in caravan insurance. Either stolen along with the caravan or they are ripped by high winds and the second of those accounts for most claims that we see for awnings.

We seem to hear the same story time and time again. Typically it goes like this. "The wind got up in the night and the wife and I thought we should try and take the awning down to save it being blown away. We got it half way down and there was an almighty gust of wind and the wind pulled it out of our hands and ripped it to shreds". We have had them end up in the tops of trees in tatters and often it is just the cover that is ripped, perhaps with some of the poles being bent. It is very rare for the caravan to be damaged at the same time."

Some policies would not cover this type of claim but the touring caravan insurance policy from Caravanwise provides full coverage. http://www.caravanwise.co.uk/

So what should caravanners do? Well, the best advice is to pull out your insurance policy and read the details. If your policy does provide awning cover then read the small print to see what is excluded. Almost all policies will have a general exclusion for wear and tear and deterioration caused by age and atmospheric conditions. So it will never be insured for the canvas fading or for mildew or rotting, you have to take care of it, but the question is, is storm damage, the most common cause of claims covered. Some policies that cover the awning exclude storm and/or wind damage others have small print excluding damage to the awning unless the caravan is damaged at the same time. It is too late to find that the cover you thought applied to your awning is excluded when you need to make a claim, check now. http://www.caravanwise.co.uk/

A decent awning can easily cost over £1000 and will cost around £20 to insure but that £20 could be a waste of money if you find that it isn't covered for storm damage after it is ripped in high winds

10 Tips To Get The Right Caravan Insurance Cover

default 10 Tips To Get The Right Caravan Insurance Cover

There are many caravan insurance policies available on the market, but how do you get the right cover?

Check out our top tips below:

    1. Get The Right Cover For Your Caravan
Sounds obvious, right? But nonetheless it’s worth ensuring that your caravan is insured appropriately. Make sure that you’ve accurately stated the replacement value of the caravan and also mention any specific requirements to make sure your caravan is fully covered; otherwise you could find yourself severely out of pocket if the worst happens.

    2. Consider A ‘Replace As New’ Policy
Does your policy offer a ‘Replace as New’ option, whereby a new or similar caravan will be provided in the event that your caravan is stolen or written off? It is worth finding out if your caravan qualifies for this option. The premium is a little more expensive, but may be worth considering.

    3. Contents Cover
Check to see that the contents that you own inside the caravan are covered. Also stipulate any items that may be excluded in the policy, such as personal cash or credit cards.

    4. Check the Small Print
Read the policy terms and conditions that are provided by the company. Ensure that you understand the conditions that apply to your particular policy. Failure to comply with the conditions may result in your policy being voided.

    5. Usage
Where do you take your caravan? UK only? Or abroad? However and whenever you use your caravan, make sure you’re covered. If you plan on taking your caravan abroad, you may find that your existing policy will cover you for a set number of days, however if you plan to be away for longer tell your insurance company and make sure that you’ve got the right insurance cover.

    6. Breakdown Cover
If something happens to your caravan while you are touring which renders it unusable, does your insurance cover you for breakdowns? It can be extremely expensive if not! Ideally you want a policy which offers alternative accommodation or an alternative caravan. You’ll also need to check coverage outside the UK if you plan to take your caravan abroad - will they repatriate the caravan to the UK and is there any cover for the towing vehicle?

    7. Liability Cover
Check to see that you have adequate liability cover and find out if legal fees are also included in the policy.

10 Tips To Get The Right Caravan Insurance Cover8. Security
In the terms and conditions, double check the security policy to find out what level of security is required. There is usually a minimum level of security required for caravans, such as a hitch lock or a wheel clamp, and when they must be applied. You may also find that some insurers offer discounts for additional security features such as alarms or tracking devices.

    9. Ask Questions
Don’t be afraid to ask your insurance provider questions to ensure that you understand what your caravan insurance policy covers. Also, disclose all details about your caravan, even if they seem minor to you, as they may affect your policy.

    10. Shop Around
Compare the different caravan insurance policies on offer and see which ones suit your caravanning needs best. If you are comparing prices, remember to check that you really are comparing like for like. We all like to save money, but the cheapest policy isn’t always going to be the best option, particularly if you’re not going to get the same level of cover.

default Top Tips for Finding the Best Caravan Insurance

According to the statistics, UK caravanning is on the rise. Indeed, of the Britons who holiday at home, nearly 20 percent choose to do so in a caravan. And, offering up the opportunity of freedom on the open road, as well as presenting a flexible accommodation option, it is easy to see why it’s so popular.

However, . Not only does it involve forking out a large sum of money, but it can also be an attractive target for thieves: figures estimate that around 5,000 touring caravans are stolen every year. Therefore, it is essential that if you own a caravan, you take the right measures to fully protect it.

touring caravan insurance 2 Top Tips for Finding the Best Caravan InsuranceFor instance, applying the appropriate security measures can help to reduce the likelihood of someone breaking in. There are many gadgets on the market, such as Approved Security Devices, alarms and/or wheel clamps that have been designed to deter people from stealing or vandalising your caravan.

Remembering to close and secure all doors and windows, even if you are away from your caravan for a moment, is also important. Storing it in a safe area when not in use can additionally prevent any mishaps from occurring. And, in being security-conscious you can also help to lower the cost of your caravan insurance premium.

The experts purport that choosing the right insurance is absolutely vital when protecting your caravan. In fact, without an appropriate package you could be left facing huge bills should something go wrong.

There are several key points, they say, to bear in mind when searching for caravan insurance. Firstly, make sure you select a package that offers you a new for old replacement: your caravan is expensive and having to replace a damaged or stolen one can be extremely costly.

You will also need to consider where you travel with your caravan. For example, if you only holiday in Britain then you won’t need to be covered for European excursions. However, if you do intend to head across the water, confirm that your insurance offers this option. Most policies should cover you for 180 days away, per trip.

Factoring in recovery costs is another crucial consideration. It can cost as much as £3,500 to retrieve a broken down caravan from abroad. Consequently, if you want to avoid having to shell out thousands of pounds in the event of something going wrong, it is a good idea to find a comprehensive package. Finally, when considering which caravan insurance product to go for, make sure you can receive adequate personal accident, public liability and driver’s cover. In doing so, you can help to minimise the risk of losing money and falling foul of thieves.

Coverage Under Caravan Insurance:

In Touring Caravan or Trailer Insurance, the premiums you pay will be based on a moving vehicle. This type of insurance is right for folding trailers, campers, demountable camper units, and slide on campers as well as horse floats. This type of insurance provides for coverage based on the agreed value of the caravan. It usually provides protection of all types when you are on the road or off, but is limited to use within Australia. Insurance for Static Caravans

Caravan insurance can be a complicated matter, if you don't take out enough or the right type you could be left having to pay for your claim out of your own pocket if you are unlucky enough to have to make a claim. Your insurance needs would depend on what you do with your Caravan. It could be used as a tourer or it could be used to rent out if it was static on site. In both of these cases you would need to ensure that you had the right insurance.

Your choices for insurance are fully comprehensive and third party fire and theft. If you buy a Caravan over a certain amount of money or you buy a brand new one then you would have to take out fully comprehensive insurance. This would provide you with the most protection for your Caravan. You could consider a cheaper form of insurance if you are buying a second hand cheaper model of Caravan.

default Insurance for Static Caravans

If you were looking for static Caravan insurance then you would have to take into account such as cover for items in the Caravan. This is essential when renting out to holiday makers as breakages do happen and there is even theft that has to be taken into account. When renting, particularly if it is your livelihood, you would also have to check to find out if your policy provided you with protection for a loss of rental if your Caravan was damaged and it was inhabitable. Depending on how long it took to make repairs and get it back to site you could lose out on hundreds of pounds in rent.

A static Caravan would also be unlived in for sometime out of the year. Therefore you want to ensure it would be protected against break in and damage caused by vandalism. You could perhaps make savings on static insurance if you ensured the Caravan was a safe as possible during these times. This could mean installing an alarm system, locks on the door and smoke alarms. All of these could go towards ensuring your Caravan was safe. Choosing a static site that was walled, has security lightning and someone on site could also help towards keeping down the cost of the insurance premiums.

caravan2 Insurance for Static Caravans

If you have a touring Caravan and are looking for insurance for this then you would also have different needs. If you planned on touring around Europe in your Caravan then you would need to ensure that you would be protected to do so. Some providers would offer European cover that lasted for so many days out of the year while others might not set a limit which would leave you free to travel in Europe for however long you wanted.

When looking for your Caravan insurance always ensure that you read the small print of any policy you are considering taking out. The limits for paying out on certain items could vary greatly between providers. You should always be given the key facts document which would allow you to make a comparison of any cover you were looking into that much easier.
