Caravan insurers and their wording

Article by Roger Jones

Understanding the insurance cover provided by your caravan insurers is critically important. It is worth noting that such cover may place certain obligations on you, including:

• you may be obliged to think very carefully about where you are planning to site your caravan - some caravan insurers, for example, may not welcome sites with a known background of flooding or they may require, in the case of statics and park homes, that you only use sites that are formally and legally registered with the local authorities;

• you may find that your caravan insurance policy requires that you use certain forms of security (hitchlocks, wheel clamps and alarms etc) as mandatory;

• if your caravan is mobile, typically considered to mean touring caravans and motorhomes, you may find that the policy places certain restrictions on the age and experience levels of anyone that is likely to tow/drive the caravan;

• caravan insurers may vary significantly in terms of their attitudes towards contents cover - some, for example, may exclude high-value items from cover including things such as PCs, mobile phones, laptops, some forms of jewellery and cash etc, so do check the policy wording and look at any exclusions;

• if your policy provides European cover, it may be on the basis of asking you to restrict yourself to a specific number of days driving per year or a maximum number of miles/km;

• if you are unfortunate enough to experience burglary or vandalism to your caravan, your policy may oblige you to report it to police within a specified period of time and to obtain evidence that you have done so;

• if you have a static caravan, you may find that the policy requires you to drain down all water systems in the winter - it may also place certain obligations on you regarding the way the caravan is secured, such as ensuring that it is jacked off its wheels and secured through formal concrete anchors etc;

• your policy may or may not have special requirements with regard to things such as awnings, where it may require you to commit to stowing them away when you are away from your caravan, as storm damage to an awning while you are not present, may not be covered.

Caravan insurers will typically make considerable effort to try and ensure that these conditions are clearly articulated in their policy documentation but if you are ever unsure, it may make sense to contact your insurer for clarification.

Tips, Help and Advice on searching for a suitable caravan insurance deal by our long standing park manageress Judy Weight with 27 years experience. Below Judy answers some typical questions regarding Static caravan holiday home insurance.

Can we save money by not taking out caravan insurance cover?

We would not advise it! Not only do you risk losing the contents but also your complete static caravan holiday home, with nothing to show for all your hard work and expense to obtain it in the first place! For the sake of paying £250 - £300 a year on a "New for Old" static caravan insurance policy which guarantees that you get a get a brand new static caravan should the worst happen it is simply not worth it. Admittedly, statistics indicate that the majority of people do not need to claim on their insurance policy, but what happens if you turn out to be one of the exceptions? At the very leat paying an insurance premium gives you peace of mind.

Does caravan insurance cover you against every risk?

Yes and no! It pays to check the wording on your policy. "Market value only" caravan insurance can leave you high and dry in a total loss claim as you would only receive what your caravan is worth today, which in most instances is not enough for you to purchase another static caravan and continue living the caravanning lifestyle you enjoy. We insure our caravanners on a "New for Old" static caravan insurance policy basis which covers against total loss, fire, theft, storm, flood, escape of oil or water, impact, subsidence, vandalism and terrorism. For the extra £20 a year this insurance policy costs it is well worth it in the sense that it is calculated on the size of your static caravan rather than the year. Meaning that regardless of the age and current market value of your 35 x 12 foot static caravan, for example purposes; in a total loss claim your insurance would pay out at least £18,000.

Does the caravan insurance policy cover the whole cost of replacing everything?

Not quite. In the event of a claim, your policy pays out the sum you had already agreed less any excess you agreed to pay. Like car insurance, the amount of excess you agree to pay the lower your yearly insurance premiums. Taking the example above, our New for old insurance premium on a 35 x 12 foot static caravan with a total loss payout of £18,000 and £50 excess costs £275.

Where can I get the best static caravan insurance deals?

Just like car insurance, it pays to shop around, and the easiest and most time effective way of doing this is via the internet. Simply get several quotations and compare them. Make sure that you are comparing like with like mind, by entering exactly the same information and having the same insurance policy for every quote.

Are we at any risk of being caught out when making a claim?

The best way to avoid any hassle is to go under your caravan holiday home parks block insurance scheme. Not only because there is safety in numbers but because they will take care of all the paperwork and administration for you and sort out your claim should the worse happen.

If you take out your own policy then this will only really happen if you have underestimated the value of your policy. Be open and honest when filling out your form, concealing relevant information may make the policy void in the event of a claim and as tempting as paying £20 less insurance premium each year may be; choose "new for old" caravan insurance cover if you don't want to end up with a payout which represents a fraction of the cost of a new replacement. To be on the safe side, specify accidental damage cover, especially if you have small children.

Question by Craig C: Is ther any caravan sites that will allow us to stay?
I am trying to book a caravan holiday for me and my mates and all i keep getting is "this is a family and couples only park". There would be 2 18 year olds, 1 19 year old and 1 16 year old going. Is there anywhere that would allow this(IN THE UK)??

Websites if possible. Thanx

Answer by NotEckyBoy
You'll be lucky....maybe one of the travelling people's sites but that would be about it.

You'd be better trying for a hostel of some kind surely? - Or some kind of adventure type holiday that caters for your age group.

The problem being that everyone has this preconception you see. That you will trash the caravan, throw litter everywhere, play loud music till 3 am, get drunk, fight, swear and engage in antisocial behaviour. And I bet you're not like that at all, really.

Get yourselves over to Benidorm lads! - it would probably be cheaper than a UK caravan holiday in any case.

Question by johnwl33: Can anybody identify the location of the Inspector Linley episode shown on 27 August 2006 "One Guilty Deed"
The caravan park was named "Paradise Family Caravan Park". Where is this place and is this the real name of the caravan park? My wife and I would like to visit the place but cannot identify it. We guess it is on the South coast.
